How Church Savings Group changed life for a Divorced Single Mother in Lwengo

Divorce often means the end of the road for most women in poor communities. But for Mable Ndagire a CCT Member in Kinoni Baptist church, it marked the opening of a new one.

Ndagire’s husband divorced her, over her refusal to convert to Islam.

Rather than succumbing to the trying demand, she joined Kinoni Baptist Church CCT Group where she learned among other skills; savings, and optimum utilization of locally available resources to support her children since she was a single mother.

Within a year of her savings scheme, she was able to acquire her own piece of land using her savings and a small loan facility from the CCT SACCO.

She planted at least 200 coffee trees on this land with support from Share An Opportunity Uganda.  Mable expects her first harvest in 2024.

Promoting Sustainable Livelihoods in the households within the supported communities is one of Share An Opportunity Uganda’s focuses towards achieving its strategy. This is done by; promoting economic dignity, food security, and basic needs for children and households in partner communities.

In the Masaka sub-region, over 500 farmers are equipped with new techniques for increasing coffee productivity. As a result of new skills, farmers have opened new coffee gardens while others cut down those that were not planted following new techniques. With increased household income, SAO U is optimistic that caregivers will be able to care for their children by providing basic needs.

The organization has been empowering communities to provide holistic development for children in Central, Eastern, and Northern Uganda for close to 30 years. Established in 1991 as a small Save A Child Program, Share An Opportunity Uganda evolved over the years into a leading Christian Child-Centered and Registered Non- Governmental Organization. Its mandate is the expression of Christian Care to children in need irrespective of race, sex, nationality, and religious or political conviction.

SAO U seeks funds from donors/well-wishers from time to time to be used to empower communities to provide holistic development to children and youth in Uganda. To donate, Log on to www.saouganda.org and follow the prompts. May God bless you.
