Our Journey

Our Story of Impact & Growth

SAO-U was founded in 2015 by a group of passionate individuals who witnessed firsthand the challenges facing rural communities in Uganda. What started as a small initiative to support local schools has grown into a comprehensive organization serving over 45 communities.

Our founders, led by Executive Director Sarah Namakula, recognized that sustainable change requires a holistic approach. By combining education, healthcare, and economic development programs, we address the root causes of poverty and create pathways to prosperity.

Today, SAO-U operates programs across Central and Northern Uganda, working closely with local partners and community leaders to ensure our initiatives are culturally appropriate and sustainable.

What We Do

Key Initiatives & Impact

From child protection to climate resilience, our integrated programmes drive lasting community transformation across Uganda.

Initiative 01

Child Protection & ECD

13,500+
Children Enrolled in Supported ECD Centers
Abim Kaberamaido Ages 0–7

SAO U is deeply committed to ensuring safe, nurturing, and child-friendly environments. In districts such as Abim and Kaberamaido, the organisation has constructed and strengthened Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers, improving access to quality education for children aged 0–7 years.

To date, over 13,500 children have been enrolled in supported centers, where they receive early learning opportunities, nutritious meals, and education on hygiene and life skills.

Beyond infrastructure, SAO U has strengthened community-based child protection systems by forming child clubs, training local leaders, and increasing awareness of children's rights—leading to improved reporting and response to child rights violations.

Recognizing that child well-being is closely linked to household income stability, SAO U supports rural households to improve their economic resilience.

In Abim and other partner communities, the organization has reorganized 1,500 farmers into structured farmer networks, trained them in climate-smart and improved agricultural practices, and promoted savings through Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

Through these initiatives, caregivers and farmers have strengthened their incomes, diversified livelihoods, and launched micro-enterprises—contributing to more stable and supportive home environments for children.

Youth empowerment remains central to SAO U's community transformation approach. In Abim alone, over 900 youths have received training in technical and vocational skills such as tailoring, hairdressing, mechanics, and agribusiness.

These interventions enhance employability, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance. Additionally, SAO U promotes youth participation in leadership and civic engagement, positioning young people as active contributors to community development.

Since its formal registration in 2002, SAO U has continuously strengthened its governance, financial systems, and programme quality. The organization is currently guided by its 2023–2027 Strategic Plan, which focuses on sustainability, accountability, and measurable impact.

A notable milestone includes the implementation of the SEFULAC project in Abim, funded by the European Union, aimed at ending child labour and improving child protection systems. Continuous staff capacity building and strategic partnerships have further enhanced the organization's institutional resilience and effectiveness.

In response to growing climate challenges, SAO U has integrated environmental sustainability into its programming. The organization has established modern tree nursery sites across districts including Abim and Kaberamaido, producing thousands of seedlings each season.

Building on this commitment, SAO U has distributed and planted over 956,950 tree seedlings across districts such as Mbale, Abim, and Kaberamaido—contributing to environmental restoration and climate resilience.

The organization also collaborates with local governments to strengthen disaster risk reduction strategies and promote energy-saving initiatives, enhancing community preparedness and sustainability.
