Our Journey Through Time

Milestones & Achievements

Every step of our journey has been driven by our commitment to creating lasting positive change in Ugandan communities

1991

Foundation and Early Beginnings

Share An Opportunity Uganda (SAO U) began as a vision rooted in Christian compassion and community service. The organisation was founded with the mission to work with vulnerable children, youth, and communities—particularly those experiencing marginalisation and limited access to essential services. In its earliest phase, SAO U's work was largely community-led, informal, and driven by partnerships with local churches and volunteers committed to uplifting children's lives.

2002

Formal Registration and Structural Development

After more than a decade of grassroots engagement, Share An Opportunity Uganda was officially registered as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) under Ugandan law. This formalisation enabled SAO U to expand its efforts, strengthen governance, and access resources for broader community development work. It also deepened the organisation's alignment with faith-based partners, especially through its affiliation with the Baptist Union of Uganda.

2000s

Expansion of Programs and District Presence

Following registration, SAO U progressively scaled its outreach across multiple districts in Uganda. The organisation focused on creating holistic and sustainable interventions, emphasizing child well-being, youth empowerment, education improvement, and community mobilisation. SAO U extended operations into districts such as Buikwe, Mbale, Lwengo, Kalungu, Sironko, Kaberamaido, Tororo, Bukedea, Luwero, Wakiso, Nakaseke, and Mukono—reflecting its commitment to responding where need dictated and where partnerships enabled impact.

Focus on Integrated Community Development

Share An Opportunity Uganda sharpened its strategic focus on integrated community development. Programmes increasingly combined early childhood development, education access, child protection, livelihood strengthening, and youth economic empowerment. Faith-based community mobilisation became a consistent pillar of SAO U's approach, ensuring that social transformation was accompanied by strengthened community values, cooperative action, and local ownership.

2020s

Strengthening Strategic Outcomes

SAO U intensified efforts to deliver measurable community outcomes and to align programming with national development priorities and sustainable development goals. Key focus areas include: Child and Youth Empowerment—fostering confidence, leadership, and participation; Education and Child-Friendly Schools through CYCC projects; Child Safety and Protection in schools and homes; Economic Strengthening through skills development and market linkages.

Ecological Initiatives and Innovation

SAO U embraced environmental stewardship as an emerging area of impact. The organisation distributed and planted over 956,950 tree seedlings across key districts such as Mbale, Abim, and Kaberamaido, addressing environmental degradation and community awareness about climate resilience. SAO U also participated in cross-regional and international engagements including climate resilience partnerships, cultural tourism (e.g., #UnleashHackKla initiative), and strategic alliances to advance sustainable livelihoods.

2026

A Mature and Impact-Driven NGO

As of 2026, Share An Opportunity Uganda stands as a well-established, child-centred NGO with over three decades of impact. Its work continues to evolve, guided by principles of community ownership, strategic partnerships, and evidence-based interventions.
