In a transformative development, 64 caregivers from three Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Kaberamaido District have embraced income-generating activities, providing a sustainable income source that meets their families’ basic needs and contributes to community growth. By 2027, these caregivers aim to be financially stable and self-reliant, thanks to various training initiatives spearheaded by Share An Opportunity Uganda (SAO U).
At the forefront of this success are the 18 caregivers from Can Wone Lii SHG. Through specialized training in cereal value addition and confectionary, the group now processes and packages cereals into sizes ranging from 500 to 6,000 Ugandan shillings. This venture has enabled them to sell directly to consumers, shops, and mini supermarkets, bringing in a steady income that has helped them accumulate capital for microcredit, boost personal businesses, and meet their households’ needs. The Programme Area Coordinator (PAC), Stella Achan, lauded their efforts, encouraging them to stay committed and fulfill customer demands.

Meanwhile, the 23 caregivers of Monkanyakino SHG have ventured into soap production after receiving training in bar soap-making skills. Their foray into this new business has significantly bolstered the group’s capital base, allowing the caregivers to access microcredit and finance essential needs like children’s scholastic materials, school fees, and agriculture investments. Additionally, some caregivers have acquired valuable family assets, strengthening their economic resilience.
The Lubanga Ber SHG, consisting of 23 caregivers, also benefited from training in craft bag-making. This has not only inspired deeper commitment to their group but also enhanced their investment and credit capital, allowing them to fund livelihood activities, improve household income, and meet basic needs.
These stories highlight the success of SAO Uganda’s community-centered approach, which equips vulnerable caregivers with the skills needed for self-sufficiency. Through collaboration, training, and determination, these caregivers are paving the way for sustainable economic growth within their households and communities.
